Chad paced his small living room until he heard Glenn’s back door open. Glenn was letting Dude outside on his first relief trip of the day. He’d thought he’d heard some sounds from the other side of the common wall between the apartments earlier, but hadn’t been sure and didn’t want to go knocking on Glenn’s door before he was up. He managed to stay inside his own apartment for five minutes before he went out the front and knocked.

“Breakfast?” he asked as soon as Glenn opened the door. “I’ve got the makings for waffles, bacon, and eggs with coffee and juice.” When Glenn hesitated in answering, he added, “Bring Dude along.”

“Thank you, but I need to stay by my phone for emergency calls—for my work.”

“I’ll bring it over here then as soon as I get it cooked.” Glenn still hesitated. Chad recognized his excuses and withdrawal, probably sorry for what had happened the morning before. “Come on, Glenn. I want to talk to you.”

Glenn didn’t look resigned as much as defeated when he agreed. “I’ll come over, but not for long. I need to stay close to my landline phone in case an emergency comes in through the computer.”

“Fine.”

He waited. Glenn just stood there until he finally said, “I’ll be there in a few minutes.”

“Fine. I’ll-ah-just get the waffle iron heated up.”

The waffle iron was already heated. He’d rushed through the apartment when he’d gotten back from the station, picking up scattered clothes, mail, and newspapers, putting everything where it belonged. He’d even made the bed before he went to pacing, waiting for sounds to indicate Glenn was awake. The withdrawn way Glenn acted wasn’t encouraging, and he was pretty sure he knew the cause.

Chad left the front door open and went straight to the narrow aisle between two rows of cabinets that made up his kitchen. He stirred the batter he’d made ahead of time, poured it into the iron, and jerked when Glenn spoke softly behind him.

“Can I be of help?”

Wanting to say, you already have been, Chad nodded instead. Getting Glenn to relax wasn’t going to be easy. His posture was defensive, and he hadn’t brought Dude with him. “Watch the iron if you want while I start the bacon and eggs. I hope scrambled is okay. I’ve never managed to flip an egg without breaking the yolk or cooking it until it’s solid.”

“That’s fine.”

He sidestepped into the aisle. Chad turned to face Glenn as he moved to the front of the stove on the outer end to stand in front of the waffle iron, deliberately brushing cock to cock as he passed. He wanted Glenn and wanted him to know it. Glenn sucked his gut in, pulled his hips back, ducked his head, and blushed.

“Does it bother you?” Chad asked, putting bacon into a skillet on the stove. “That I want you?”

“It depends on why, I guess.”

“You mean besides you’re about the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen on two feet?” Chad teased.

Glenn didn’t even crack a smile.
